Less Scroll. More Life. Less Scroll. More Life.

Why breathing is the most underrated wellness habit

We take around twenty thousand breaths every single day without giving them much thought. Breathing is the very first thing we do when we enter the world and the last thing we do when we leave it. It is so natural that most of us assume it simply takes care of itself. Yet the way we breathe influences far more than keeping us alive. It affects our energy, our ability to focus, the way we respond to stress, the quality of our sleep and even how our bodies move throughout the day. We spend years looking for complicated solutions to feel healthier and happier, while often overlooking one of the most powerful tools we already have. Breathing is unique because it works automatically, yet we also have the ability to control it whenever we choose. That simple fact makes it one of the most accessible wellness habits available to everyone.

Many people discover breathing techniques only after they begin practicing yoga, meditation or other forms of mindfulness. What often surprises them is how quickly small changes in breathing can influence the way they feel. Slowing the breath, paying attention to each inhale and exhale and allowing the body to relax for just a few minutes can completely change the pace of a busy day. It does not remove deadlines or responsibilities, but it often changes the way we experience them. Instead of reacting automatically to every stressful situation, we begin responding with greater calm and clarity. That is why breathing is not simply another wellness trend. It is a natural ability that many of us have forgotten how to use.

The way we breathe reflects the way we live

Modern life encourages constant movement. We rush from one meeting to another, answer messages while walking, eat lunch in front of a computer and often finish one task while already thinking about the next. Our bodies may be present, but our attention rarely is. Breathing quietly mirrors this lifestyle. During stressful moments it becomes faster, shallower and less efficient. We may not notice the change, yet our nervous system certainly does. The body interprets rapid breathing as a signal that something requires immediate attention, even when the only challenge is an overloaded schedule.

The opposite is equally true. When we consciously slow our breathing, the body receives a completely different message. Heart rate begins to settle, muscles gradually relax and the mind becomes less reactive. This is one of the reasons breathing sits at the centre of so many wellness practices around the world. It creates a direct connection between body and mind without requiring complicated techniques or expensive equipment. Sometimes a few slow breaths are enough to remind us that not every moment has to feel rushed.

We breathe all day, but not always in the healthiest way

Most people have never been taught how breathing works beyond the basics of biology. As life becomes increasingly sedentary, posture changes, movement decreases and breathing often becomes shallower without us realising it. Hours spent sitting at desks, driving cars or looking down at phones gradually influence how efficiently our lungs expand and how freely our bodies move.

This is one reason why spending time outdoors often feels so refreshing. Walking through a forest, following a hiking trail or standing beside the sea naturally encourages slower and deeper breathing. Fresh air, movement and open spaces invite the body to return to a rhythm that feels more natural. People often believe they feel better simply because they escaped the city, but breathing plays an important role in that experience as well. Without consciously trying, they begin using their lungs more fully and allowing their bodies to slow down.

For this reason, many wellness activities are now practiced outside traditional studios. Outdoor yoga sessions, mindful walks, guided breathwork and gentle movement classes in nature combine physical activity with an environment that naturally supports relaxation. Instead of forcing calmness, nature creates the conditions where calmness appears almost effortlessly.

Small habits often create the biggest changes

One of the biggest misconceptions about wellbeing is that it requires dramatic lifestyle changes. Many people postpone taking care of themselves because they believe they need more free time, more motivation or a completely different routine. In reality, lasting wellbeing is usually built through small habits repeated consistently.

Breathing is perhaps the simplest example of this idea. It costs nothing, requires no equipment and is always available. A few quiet moments before starting work, after finishing a long meeting or before going to bed can become opportunities to reconnect with the present moment. These pauses may seem insignificant, yet over time they help create a healthier relationship with stress, attention and everyday life.

The goal is not to breathe perfectly. It is simply to become aware of something we already do thousands of times every day. Awareness itself often changes the experience. We become more patient, more focused and more capable of recognising when our bodies need rest instead of constant stimulation.

How InAction supports everyday wellbeing

At InAction, we believe wellbeing is not something reserved for weekends or special occasions. It is built through the choices we make every day. Choosing to move. Choosing to spend time outdoors. Choosing activities that help both body and mind work together.

Through a single platform, people can discover yoga classes, breathwork sessions, Pilates, outdoor wellness experiences and many other activities designed to support healthier living. The goal is not simply to book another class. It is to make discovering experiences that improve everyday wellbeing easier and more accessible, helping people create routines they genuinely enjoy and want to continue.

We breathe thousands of times every day without thinking about it. Perhaps the greatest opportunity is not learning something completely new, but rediscovering something that has always been there.

Sometimes wellbeing does not begin with a major life decision.

Sometimes it begins with slowing down, taking one deep breath and allowing yourself to be fully present for a single moment.
